If your friend needs to leave the transit area to collect and recheck baggage, then yes, a visa is usually required, even if they’re not staying overnight 😕. Unfortunately, Kenyan passport holders aren’t eligible for Turkey’s e-Visa, so they’ll need to apply through the Turkish Embassy in Nairobi. Unfortunately, the standard e-Visa only allows a 30-day stay 😕, and there isn’t really an option to extend it online or pay for extra days. What we did was go to the local (Immigration Office) in Turkey and apply for a short-term residence permit. It takes a bit of paperwork and time, but it’s the safest way to stay longer legally.
